Lymington Pram

The original much loved Lymington Pram was designed and built by Lymington boat builder Dan Bran in 1922 specifically as a class boat for the Lymington Yacht Club. It was set up with a single Gunter rigged main positioned well forward in the boat. This was later changed to the then very modern Bermudan rig with a small jib was sometimes used. Despite its' label, it wasn't a Pram at all, having a very attractive stem similar to the Scow, which of course is not really a Scow as we know it. For whatever reasons however, the name stuck.

The Class increased between the wars with sometimes more than twenty racing and even after it was largely replaced by the X boat and other more modern designs, the fact that it was so stable, roomy and seaworthy, made it an ideal dinghy for cruising round the Solent, indeed many of today's more mature helms, have fond memories of messing around in Prams.

Unfortunately many of the old boats have disappeared, but now thanks to Mr. Abbot and Mr. Clayton, who are enthusiastic and experienced Pram owners, the Pram has been revitalised.

We have experimented with various rigs and equipment, and got as many people to try it as possible, in order to establish what would be the definitive production boat, finally settling on a Gunter Rig with ultra-light carbon fibre spars, which has the advantages of an efficient traditional looking rig and is easy to handle and maintain. With its oiled teak gunwale thwart coamings and trim it has been described in both looks and performance as a cross between a Scow and an XOD, and being both light and stable she can be either moored afloat, or kept ashore.

British Moth Price List

- - -

Thousands of young people have learned to sail in the British Moths at the Salterns Sailing Club, and to celebrate its 50th anniversary the club decided to commission track proven designer Mervyn Cook and builder John Claridge to produce ne moth to replace their exiting boats one being over 60 years old.

The brief was to provide 6 new boats with low maintenance, but both tough enough to cope with the eccentricities of learner sailors and fast enough to complete nationally with other British Moths. Two prototypes were built , the first in plywood “A.S.B.O.” and the second “SAMESAME” had GRP hull from the new mould and ply-decks. These finished 3rd and 1st respectively in the 2010 National Championships.

So far four boats with a modern self-draining cockpit have been produced for the Salterns, and have, it is fair to say, exceeded expectations.

A fully racing self-draining version is going to be available soon, and will hopefully be companied next season.

So far this has been very a very successful project, but thanks must go to Baker-Mill charity which funded it and British moth class Association for all their help and enthusiasm, especially Graham Pope, Roger Witts and Mark Wiltshire.

Apologies to anyone who missed out on the rudder deal, we are getting through the back orders having dispatched eight so far. The blades are made solid for the pivot and down-haul points which we mark. However we've found that the webbing strap and plate works best which we can fit for an extra £10 or supply kit for £7. There is a 30mm solid section hopefully in the pivot area of the blade. On the old blades we found that having them angled slightly forward cut out some of the weather-helm, this should not be necessary with the new blades so I would suggest drilling the pivot hole so that the blade is vertical in the stock. Angling it slightly back could well be beneficial in light winds.
Please contact for any info.

Testing of new masts continues, the new Needlespar at present being favourite. However the Superspar mast may well prove better for heavier helms giving a class a wider competitive weight range.

Features of the Lightning 368 and modifications made to the Mark Giles version of the Lightning may be seen here.

Q&A

Q: What is the difference between the Dacron and Mylar Sails?

A: The Dacron and Mylar sails are of the same mould but have different panel layout cuts. Dacron, a woven fabric, is better suited to an XC panel layout. The Mylar is a laminated fabric and subsequently they are radial cut as they would not work in an XC panel format. The new myler sails match both mast sections and in theory will hold their shape better in strong winds, as well as being relatively transparent hence avoiding the need for a window. We will continue to offer both options and both sails remain class legal.

The first Scows were built in early 1900's and quickly proved successful as both a sailing and rowing dinghy. It was so ideally suited as a tender to larger yachts that many builders along the East and South Coast built Scows. It was also one of the first dinghies to change successfully from clinker to construction in glassfibre, with a smooth skin inside, and it is amazing just how many of these and their older clinker counterparts are still sailing today. The virtues of the Scow remain the same - you can sail, row, race, potter or even fit it with an outboard.

We have spent considerable time on perfecting the moulds and construction method and now produce a hard working Scow that will last for years and will become a family favourite over many generations!
